ABOUT FR. ALLENDER AT SI

Rev. Allender served SI on three different occasions for a total of 15 years–first as a scholastic (1969-1972), then as a newly-ordained priest (1975-1981), and lastly as the superior to the Jesuit community (1985-1991). In that latter role, he was one of four trustees who made the decision to open SI’s doors to young women seeking a Jesuit education in the late 1980s. Rev. Allender pioneered a meditation class that asked students to emulate St. Ignatius and his Spiritual Exercises, connecting students to their faith through stillness and reflection.

FR. ALLENDER IN THE COMMUNITY

In his 60 years in the Society of Jesus, Rev. Allender has made major impacts in the SI and greater Catholic communities. He brought his pastoral approach to St. Agnes in San Francisco, where he served from 2007 to 2021. He was, both, the Parochial Vicar and Pastor at St. Agnes Church and St. Agnes Parish. In 2013, Rev. Allender received the Brennan Award from the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which recognizes individuals whose actions have impacted those in need in San Francisco.

WHAT IS CHRIST THE KING?

"On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, or Christ the King" (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).

This Feast Day was established in 1925 by Pope Pius XI.

HOW SI CELEBRATES THIS FEAST DAY

Since 1960, St. Ignatius has recognized this Feast Day with a mass and community-wide reception honoring alumni who have distinguished themselves in their professions, shown a commitment to the SI community, and who best exemplify the ideal of service to God and fellow persons.

Recipients are presented with a medal and a Citation, a celebratory written statement highlighting the awardee's achievements and contributions to the community.

MAKE A GIFT

Every contribution—big or small—makes a difference for a student and allows SI to continue its mission of providing a Jesuit education and forming the Ignatian leaders of tomorrow.

Whether you want to help us build the NLC, grow FSA, or support a student through our Scholarship Endowment, you will make a huge impact on our community.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

Lord, teach me to be generous
teach me to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to seek reward,
save that of knowing I do Your will
